We discussed what got him interested in wanting to attend both medical and dental school as well as specialize in oral surgery. No doubt Dr. BC was intelligent and worthy of being a surgeon, but it seemed he had more than one interest and he chose oral surgery because it aligned both of his degrees. He had actually not set out on a path to become an oral surgeon. It just worked out that way since he had completed all the requirements needed to continue on such a path. He did not have any goals formulated for the future. He just had a graduation date on the calendar for his residency. More. When I was earning my wings as an Air Force pilot, I had had an instructor pilot that treated me the same. I will forever remember that instructor pilot and the dread I experienced getting out of bed to deal with another day of verbal and mental abuse. My only coping mechanism was to just keep pressing, persevering, and never give up. I now embrace that time period as essential since it attributed to my later successes and the ability to cope and survive the pressures of combat. Perhap I could elicit the same outcome with Dr. BC. We also discussed his social support network as essential for effective coping. It was noted that he did not have esteem support and very little emotional support. The majority of his support network was tangible support from his parents and spiritual from a local pastor. We cannot survive alone and people need tangible, emotional, esteem, informational, and spiritual support systems, especially when dealing with adversity (Tamminen & Gaudreau,
