John vouches for his preference by declaring, “I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin… I’m claiming the right to be unhappy (163).” By claiming this right to be unhappy, he also claims the right to be happy when he deserves it, not just when he swallows
