Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas was born on July 19, 1834, and died September 27, 1917. Edgar was born in Paris, France. He also died in Paris, France. Edgar died of brain aneurysm. Edgar was a French artist who was highly famous in the 19th century, and was famous for not only his paintings, but also his sculptures, drawings, and prints. Most of his paintings were of dancers.

Edgar was actually not born “Edgar Degas”, but Hilaire-Germain-Edgar. His father was a banker, and his mother did not work, but was from New Orleans. Their family was a part of the middle class. For years of Edgar’s life, the Edgar family spelled their name “de Gas”. The “de” stood for suggesting landowning aristocratic background, which they did not really have. As Edgar entered adulthood, he changed the name back to the original spelling. His mom was an opera singer, and his father would every now and then book musicians to rehearse in their home. In the years of 1870-71, he became a national guard. In the mid 70’s, he suffered from his eyesight failing. In 1872, he visited the United States, and while there, he visited New Orleans where some of his family were in the cotton business. In 1873 he returned from the United States and explored a different country attempting to get new ideas for new projects.

Edgar Degas went through depression, and anxiety , which would cause him to not be able to concentrate, or finish one project at a time. Despite this, and other struggles that Edgar went through, he was still as successful and as any other artist in the world of art. Edgar was not known like Picasso, Van Gogh, and Da Vinci, but is still known by people who have a passion, or love for art and that know more than the average person.
