Effective Use Of Pathos In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

Improved Essays
Pathos is a means of persuading someone by appealing to their emotions. Antony uses pathos to tell the people of Rome how Caesar loved them, while Brutus is using it to say he is willing to kill himself if that is what the people want. In Antony’s spiel, he says, “know how Caesar loved you. You are not wood, you are not stones, but men;” (Shakespeare, 3.2, 70-71). This is showing to the people of Rome that Caesar loved each and every one of the equally. I know he is using pathos because he is appealing to their emotions. While Brutus is saying that if the time comes where they want him dead, he will kill himself with the dagger used for Caesar. In Brutus’ pitch he says, “With this I depart,--that, as I slew my best lover for the good

Pathos is described as emotional appeals that “are powerful tools for influencing what people think and believe” (p. 30). “Goodbye, Columbus: Ohio’s War on the Middle Class” is an article written by Mac McClelland telling a story about the downfall of the middle class in Ohio around 2011. The story immediately starts off describing the house and the guest room that the writer will be staying in while visiting his friends and developing this story. The description of the room indicates, by the décor of the guest room, that the couple that owns the house has not had the money to paint and update the pink walls and previous owner’s name “Katie” which is marked all over the walls. Starting off with this description lays the groundwork of the pathos throughout the story.…

Clever, Clever Brutus Politicians twist the truth. Most of the time, what they say is accurate but the techniques they use have a way of manipulating listeners. All politicians do this, in fictional stories, throughout history, and even to this present day. In William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus uses manipulative devices in order to appeal to, pathos in which he evokes the feeling of being loved from the plebeians, logos in order to convince Cassius of his superior military plan, and ethos to establish trust with the commoners. Brutus’s appeal to pathos was intended to extract, from the audience, the most powerful feeling in the world, which is: love.…

Firstly, pathos is used to persuade someone by appealing to their emotions. An example of pathos is shown, when the narrator says, “Doth thee wanteth to killeth thy enemies? Doth thee wanteth a chance to winneth every battle thee square in?” These questions are asked to grab the audience’s attention and to appeal to one’s desire for power and success, which in this case is to get rid of enemies and to have a chance at winning every battle. Accordingly, people who might desire such things, like Macbeth, would keep listening to the ad and might also want to buy the product.…

It is not just the words that play a role in pathos, it is the words, the music, and even the photos, that play a role in changing the opinion of any person who has or will watch the movie “Blackfish.” An example, that the movie used to change the opinion of a person is by playing a recording of one calling 911 to inform everyone that there had been an attack. The reason that the call was a pathos is the person that called was exorbitantly terrified. Once again, an example of a pathos, is when a trainer and a whale appears to have a bond that cannot be broken. Due to the fact that the trainer and the whale love one another it shows that the trainer actually thought that they had a bond, and it was not just because the trainer gave the whale food.…

Because of this writing style, Shakespeare shows the audience internal conflict in his characters. Marcus Brutus was a very hesitant character, he constantly second guessed his decisions and pondered whether they were the correct choice. In the article Brutus’ Personal Failure is the Central Tragedy, the author says, “Brutus is the only one of the conspiritors who is portrayed as inwardly debating the justification for commiting the ‘dreadful thing’”. Almost immediately after the brutal stabbing of Caesar, Brutus doubts his hasty decision. On one hand, the killing of Caesar stopped the tyrannical reign and would hopefully restore freedom to all of Rome.…

He also uses Pathos to emotionally show why man’s inherent nature is that of evil and not good. In an effort to explain how emotion has a connection he makes this statement, “Anyone who gives free rein to his emotional nature is content to indulge his passions and disregard ritual principles becomes a petty man” (85). What he is trying to say here is that anyone who just lives by their emotions and their passions will become less and less until his importance is forgotten about. Meaning that eventually no one is going to care what they do or anything else. To add on this he goes to say that, “It is man’s emotional nature to love profit and desire gain” (86).…

It is surprising but true that audiences or readers would have come to the play knowing the outcome of the battle yet Shakespeare tends to create dramatic suspense and tension. John Summons defines 'dramatic tension' as "how you keep an audience hooked to the story of your play. It is about creating and maintaining an audience's involvement in the 'journey of your play.
