Corporations Causing Global Warming As of now, the majority of the world is able to ignore global warming. The climate changes caused by it are slight enough that few people, if anyone at all, have been affected. It is a growing problem, however. “Global warming refers to the upward temperature trend across the entire Earth since the early 20th century, and most notably since the late 1970s, due to the increase in fossil fuel emissions since the industrial revolution” (NASA: Climate Change and Global Warming). Since the industrial revolution, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has greatly increased, which has had various consequences on the world. Global temperatures have risen 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880. This heat increase has affected the top 2,300 feet of the oceans, it having warmed 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969. Both the range and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several decades, and the global sea level has risen about 6.7 inches in the last century (NASA: Climate Change and Global Warming). All of the processes that fossil fuels go through in their lifetimes, from extraction to transportation to usage, allow some amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The cement industry is different in that fossil fuels are not the main source of greenhouse emissions. The burning of fossil fuels to heat the kiln produces forty percent of the total emissions. The greatest amount of emissions is given off as calcination occurs. This process accounts for fifty percent of all emissions from cement production. The remaining percentage is from the electricity used to power additional plant machinery and the final transportation of cement
