“Safety concerns will prevent germline engineering from coming to pass; the risk of creating deformed babies is too great” Stolberg. S. (2000). Lewis in “There are really good reasons why we should — and shouldn't — genetically engineer human embryos”, explains about a Chinese experiment on gene modification. The result was that gene modification could be done on human embryos however it can cause “off target” and unintended effects on certain parts of the genome causing fatal genetic complications. Lewis’s article is important because it illustrates the effects of genetic modification on the embryo’s health. Genetic engineering can cause deletions and alterations to the DNA, affecting negatively it’s natural functioning and what is produced. Also, genetic modification consists of removing undesired genes from the embryo. It is a one-way change. The changes made to the genes cannot be unchanged, and thus these changes will be inherited by the future generations. Marcy Darnovsky (2014) claims in Genetically Modified Babies that genetic modification is dangerous. This method alters every cell in the children’s bodies regardless of their function where these changes might transfer to the future. In addition, designer baby is not a free error process. Numerous mistakes might happen in the laboratory causing accidental miscarriage. If accidents occur during the modification of certain genes in babies, problems …show more content…
Such disabilities include Being deaf, blind or dumb can prevent these people from living a normal life just like anyone else. However, some people with certain chronic illnesses were able to achieve something in life. For example, Jennifer Aniston is a famous American actress who had dyslexia was able to become a famous actress. Also, genetic modification is costly and only wealthy people are able to modify the genes of their babies. This would affect the social values of the society regarding accepting disabled people. It will also affect the equality in the society between normal and disabled people. For example, disabled people will face a lot of problems in getting a job in the society, especially that there are disabled people who were able to reach high
