A situation that gives frustration for some teachers may not be the same for the other, so stress is a very complex phenomenon. Whenever there is threat to the person’s well-being the body responds and this is known as stress response. Studies say that stress is an emotional state that is experienced by an individual.
Public schools are run by government as well as by some individuals and stakeholders or trustees. Thus, the Department of Education has the mandate to maintain the physical and psychological wellness of teachers throughout the country. Without it the effects of stress can lead to reduced teachers’ performance at work, increased sickness absence and even death.
In the educational process, the teacher occupies a very important place. A teacher is the medium through which objectives and plans can be actualized. For this, the teacher must have sound mental and physical health. The person’s mental health has direct and significant relationship on his / her working efficiency. Despite endeavors by school management to try to retain their employees, cases of stressed employees continue to exist which in turn results in lack of commitment amongst teachers. Data revealed by DepEd’s Central Office that about 7% of teachers leave every year for other jobs due to workload and non commitment (Panes, 2011).
