In 1842, Karl Richard Lepsius composed the first modern list of pyramids. He counted 67, however, there have been many more that have been discovered. As of November 2008, 118 pyramids were discovered.
Most pyramids are in poor state of preservation or buried by desert sands. If they are even visible, they look like mounds of rubble. Archeologists have the opportunity the identify and study previously unknown pyramids. The most recent one discovered belonged to Queen Sesheshet, mother of 6th dynasty Pharaoh Teti, found in Saqqara.
