This experiment applied principles from the Elaboration Likelihood Model of persuasion to the prevention of eating disorders. Female adolescents were told to watch either only a preventive video tape, watch a video and have a post-video activity such as verbal discussion and a written exercise, or simply undergo no intervention whatsoever. Significantly more body image improvements occurred at post-video and follow-up in the intervention groups compared to those who underwent no intervention at all. The conclusion was that there were no differences among intervention groups or between girls with high or low elaboration likelihood.
