Video Games Affecting Today's Youth

In America 91% of the youth ages 2-17 play video games and that amount is rising(Camp, Jeffrey Van). Playing video games is more common in today's time than it was in the past, many more youth are affected as a result. There are many emotions that are involved in gaming, such as anger, aggression, calm, satisfaction. Gaming is a bonding mechanism.Certain skills are gained from playing games such as hand-eye, coordination, communication, etc. Kids in today’s society are affected differently by games, they play to get out of the real world for a while, whether that’s to release built up aggression or to just spend time online with people that they relate to.

In games such as Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six Siege the player must communicate with his/her team to allow them to become better players as well as building their communication skills. Games like these train kid’s hand/eye coordination as well as their sight and hearing. Youth that play games that implement a communication system benefit greatly by being able to open up. Kids who have played games for a while have increased hand eye coordination from having to watch the screen and use their controller at the same time. Today’s youth can also train their memory by remembering how to do certain things in game to pass a level or get a achievement. If video games have really caused youth to act in such violent ways then studies would show that youth are the primary shooters, but they don’t. Kids that play games and who have had trouble opening up to others have become more social due to playing games. Skills are trained in youth who play games and over time they become stronger. Kids who have struggled with depression have found that playing games is a good release from the real world. Modern society has made it a better thing to be a gamer and has made gamers feel more welcome into the world. Kids that play games in today's society have been accepted with open arms but it is up to the parents do decide if its the best time for them to be playing games that are not the best influence on them.
