Teachers have a duty to be able to define what is meant by inclusion and inclusive practice. I ensure my commitment to equality and diversity is demonstrated through my inclusive teaching practice. Regardless of my learners age, background, race or ability, all are encouraged to reach their full potential in a learning environment where they feel safe and valued.
Within my level 1 hairdressing 16-19 tutor group, two of my learners where from the travelling community. This was a great opportunity for these learners to continue with their education. Through equality and diversity being embedded and unacceptable behaviour challenged from the beginning of the programme, the barriers that may have prevented both learners engaging fully into the group where abolished. Both leaners completed the programme gaining their level 1 hairdressing qualification and functional skills English and maths. Neither had gained any qualification prior to this. One of the learners achieved the level 1 hairdresser of the year award and has progressed onto the level 2 hairdressing programme. Learners may need to be referred on to appropriate people or agencies if the issues they bring fall outside the limits of a teachers practice. All learners are entitled to an INA assessment to determine if additional in class support is needed. Additional learning support can be provided from within colleges or outside agencies. Encouraging learners to use the facilities available to them within college will promote a sense of belonging. I encourage all learners to work with the library mentor team who will give assistance with assignments and workbooks.
