At that moment, everyone heard the door being ripped from it’s hinges. George knew in that very moment that it was his son Harrison. Harrison got everyone’s attention by unclothing himself from the chains and restrictions that were weighing him down. He went and found the most beautiful ballerina and unclothed her from her mask.
This ballerina is fitted for him, as Harrison was thought to me the most handsome man. They then danced on the stage for everyone to watch. Then the handicapper general came in the studio and fired twice at Harrison and the ballerina. Both dropped dead to the floor instantly. After this, the H-G pointed the gun at the musicians and gave them 10 seconds to get all their handicaps back on. The Bergeron’s TV went dead after that. Hazel had been crying and when George asked why, she had said she forgot.
The setting for this short story is very crucial for the story to have a full, emotional effect on the audience. As I stated earlier, the story took place in 2081. If the writer would have made the setting any different, it would not have captivated the story. In order for all this technology to be valid and accurate, it needed to be a while in the future. The story was based around the three main characters, Harrison and his mom and dad. Because he gave the family members different strengths and weaknesses, it is easier as a reader to find someone you have great similarities with. If a reader was just average in school a reader that is just average would side more with that character. Even with the ballerina that Harrison danced with, a reader could find a similarity. Whether it be the reader is really good at dance, extremely gorgeous, extremely quick, a reader could relate to those traits as well.
The themes that Vonnegut portrayed in the short story were human nature, human rights and sexism. The laws that everyone had to obey went against everything that correlates with human nature. People are born the way they are for a reason. By adding these handicaps to people, they weren’t able to live the life that they were intended to live. This also makes it hard for anyone to find something they are passionate about and excel by doing
