Eritrean Dance Experience

Improved Essays
Being an Eritrean American has always been something Ia??m proud of. In an effort to better connect myself with my heritage, I began to take Eritrean cultural dance lessons in order to be part of the Eritrean festival dance performance. I have always wanted to excell in everything that I do, especially if it meant a lot to me. I did not expect that these dance lessons would provide me with the lesson of handling failure and criticism. The Eritrean dance performance gave me the opportunity to choreograph my own dance for the first time. Since I was experienced and practiced for this dance I thought I would have no problem being chosen to be in the dance. However, during try-outs, my cousin and I performed what we believed to be a great routine. …show more content…
This meant not being able to dance with my cousin. I choose to join a different group to better my chances in the competition. Sadly, we did not perform at the festival again. I was not quite as upset this time, and I took my failure with clarity. As the next year approached, I promised myself that things would be different. I was more experienced and educated about what makes a dance successful on stage. By thinking about every comment I had ever received about my dances, and combining that with my determination, I finally earned the opportunity of performing in 2012 Eritrean festival. Finally, I saw that the past three years of my hard work had not been worthless. This achievement meant more than performing at the festival; it taught me valuable lessons as well. I learned a lesson I would never have learned were I to get in on the first try. Now, when I face an obstacle, I know not to give up because that would get rid of all hope of accomplishing my goals. I have also learned that failure and criticism are very important parts of the learning practice of life. Now I am more open to receive criticism now and to use it to improve myself, rather than to discourage

Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…

Fast forward a bit to prelims night of grand nationals where we had to compete against 90 bands from across the nation who wanted a shot at a national title and an invitation to march in the 2014 Tournament of Roses parade in California. We had a late performance time on Friday and wouldn’t know the results until Saturday morning. Once we found out we made it to semi-finals we practiced more, then that afternoon we had our performance. If we were in the top twelve of the afternoon, we would earn a spot in the finals performances that night. The clarinet section found out the results from semi-finals on the bus going to finals and we had won.…

I’ve worked at this (along with another ensemble) for months. After performing the best I’d ever had I thanked the judge and swiftly left the room along with my cousin. Once we were out of ears reach we celebrated as much as we could in a crowded hallway. I ended up getting a 1 (the best score you can get) and the satisfaction of those around me congratulating me. I wouldn’t of had this…

I was shocked and felt the same twinge in my stomach that I did before my audition. I knew that this was just the beginning of my journey and that I had a lot of hardwork left. I immediately began practicing and had the solos down, except none of the reeds I was making were good enough. Then, the last week before the intensive rehearsals and concert, I managed to make 3 good reeds. About half way through my first rehearsal my first solo came up…

As we auditioned for the Student Choreography Showcase, I was very nervous and anxious because it was something that really meant a lot to me and something that I wanted to share with all my classmates. During auditions, I surprised myself a lot because I picked up on choreography faster than I thought. I felt really confident in what I was performing for each choreographer. I had a couple of the choreographers call me back out to see my performance for a second time. The second time performing, I only performed it better than the first time.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

My mood was jubilant that day because I was glad I came to that performance instead of staying home. I would have felt home sick with all that final review so it was pleasant and peaceful having entertainment for such a low cost but great performance. The movements I identified were a lot of the terms I went over in dance class from degage to grand battement, the list goes all over. The name of the performance should be called “The Art of Adventure” and it should be divided into subgenres which focuses on the main theme adventure. Adventure can be dim or bright but they always seem to have a long lasting well produced ending.…
