According to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, “About 40 percent of U.S. public high schools open before 8 a.m., with just 15 percent starting 8:30 a.m. or later.” These statistics show that earlier school starting times are favored by many school systems. However, with that comes many problems for both students and teachers. For these reasons, and numerous more, I believe that schools start times should be later because of the countless benefits that could be obtained by students and teachers.

This causes many teens to come to school not prepared for their classes and, in turn, they do not obtain the information that they need during instruction. This problem has also shown to be dangerous for students. After waking up extremely early and struggling to get through school, many teens are so tired by the time they go home that they fall asleep at the wheel. It is proven in the same article that when high schools in Fayette County, Kentucky delayed their school start times, the number of teenagers involved in car crashes dropped dramatically. This evidence should be enough to catch the attention of administrators and provoke them to rethink their choices about the early starting times of their schools. These are only a few of the important reasons to make school start times

Throughout her book, The Overachievers: A Story of Success, Alexandra Robbins argues that as time goes on, students are put under an increasing amount of pressure to be involved in every activity and club possible in order to stand out in the college admission process. In chapter seven of her book, Robbins argues that this over-involvement can cause sleep deprivation in students. She cites the National Sleep Foundation as reporting this increase in involvement “can cause negative moods, decreased school performance, increased likelihood to try stimulants, and a higher risk of accidents and death. The latter category includes teen drivers who fall asleep at the wheel” (Robbins 179). A possible solution to this problem that many suggest is moving…
