In the New South volume of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Alan Gribben replaces the n-word with slave. “It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a slave” (65) “Here was this slave, which I had good as helped to run away, coming right out flat-footed and saying he would steal his children” (67) By taking the word “nigger” out of the novel, the reader will lose focus of its importance in the original book, which was the shame and name calling that made slavery very dramatic in the society that Huck and Jim lived in. “This may be their first encounter with slavery-there is a reality there you cannot avoid” (“Huckleberry Finn” and the N-Word) Censoring written materials could potentially dull the realistic expression of a certain event that the author is trying to inform the reader about.
Another reason why written materials should be banned is because it may include violent language.
There are times that some written materials should be banned but written materials should never be censored. When written materials are censored, the reader can lose focus of the initial meaning of what the author is trying to incorporate.
