The dictionary definition of phonology is, “the science of speech sounds, including especially the history and theory of sound changes in a language or in two or more related languages” (Phonology, n.d). Many of the dialect questions have questions asking if the word is composed of the same sound. A question asked in the quiz by John Katz, is “How do you pronounce Marry/merry/marry?” (2013). The results show more than half answered “all 3 are the same (56.88%)” and only a few answered “merry and marry are the same; Marry is different(0.96%)” (Dialect Survey Result, n.d). Comparing from the maps, the 0.96% does not specifically group in a region rather it is mostly scatter across United State. Using phonological questions is a good way to distinguish an accent in different part of United State. There are not a lot of syntax questions in Josh Katz dialect quiz. Syntax is, “the way in which words are put together to form phrases, clauses, or sentences” (Syntax, n.d). Syntax is a set of rules in a language. It dictates how words from different parts of speech are put together in order to convey a complete thought. Looking through the quiz, there are rarely any syntax questions, especially in Josh Katz 25 dialect quiz. Syntax questions are not used frequently because the rules in languages for English do not change drastically throughout the different
