Defining the Purpose of Medical Assistants
There are many careers to pursue in this world. One career you can do is work in the health field so many options to choose from, you can be a Registered Nurse, Dental Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, and much more. However, in this paper, we are talking about one particular field of health and that is Medical Assistants. “Medical assistants are multi-skilled health care practitioners trained to work in the business and clinical parts of a medical office, clinic or hospital.” (“Medical Assistant” 1). At Jackson College, medical assistants must take all required classes. Well, that is a medical assistant. They help provide the doctor basic information before the doctor comes to visit you. However, that isn’t the only thing that they do. These are the most skills used in doctor’s office setting: Record patient history and personal information. Measure vital signs, such as blood pressure, help the physician with patient examinations, give patients injections or medications as directed by the physician and as permitted by state law, schedule patient appointments, prepare blood samples for laboratory tests, and enter patient information into medical records. (“Medical Assistant” 2). With the many things that they can do, this is what makes them become a vital source of help for other departments. “They assist physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and optometrists in helping their offices run smoothly.” (“Medical Assistant” 2). Medical assistants can specialize in their administrative or clinical work. This includes the following fields: Administrative medical assistants which work in offices, checking in patients, providing medical billing, and coding. Clinical medical assistants which provide laboratory tests for doctors, dispose contaminations such as surgical supplies and instructing patients on medication. Ophthalmic medical assistants and optometric assistants provide help with eye care, showing patients how to insert, remove and care for their contact lenses. Podiatric medical assistants provide help with foot doctors which include making casts, developing x-rays, and can help the doctor with surgery.
