If a student were to be sent to me after partaking in a violent act, I would have a difficult time empathizing with that student. I do not believe that is the way to solve problems, especially if the student is violently bullying other students. I will have to remain unbiased and listen to the students and work with the student on underlying issues. It will be my ethical duty to not judge or jump to conclusions as to why the student resorted to violence. This will be an area that I will need to focus on my initial emotional response and gather myself before working with the student. My views on violence should not interfere with my ability to be a counselor. The final tough ethical issue that I feel strongly about is in regards to race. The topic of race has been flooding the news and political world. Since I am a white female, I need to be aware that I do hold some power and privilege in today’s society. Though I may experience some feelings of oppression due to male dominance, I must be aware that the life I live is different than the life of a black female. Race is a topic that still makes me uncomfortable to talk about and deal with first
