In the United States, one out of every four accidents are caused by texting and driving. According to the National Safety Council, using a cell phone while driving leads to around 1.6 million crashes annually. Around 330,000 injuries to people are caused by those crashes from cell phone use while driving. When a person uses a cell phone while they’re behind the wheel, they significantly reduce the safety of drivers, passengers, other road users, and even the pedestrians around them. Cell phones have become such a huge distraction for many drivers today, and there needs to be a change before more people are harmed. The younger generation of drivers are more into texting than anything else. Texting while driving can make vehicle accidents 23 times more likely to occur. Texting is much worse than other distractions like talking on a phone, talking with a passenger or adjusting the radio. Texting is one of the worst distractions because it involves looking at and concentrating on the phone to read. To reply to a text, a person typically has to take their hand off of the wheel. The person’s mind is also now focused on what the text says, and what they are going to reply. Many people have an urge to reply to a text, as if it won’t be there when they get to their destination. Teen drivers grew up around cell phones, and using cell phones, majority of them agree that using them can be dangerous while driving but they still do it.
