Roles We Play In the story of Beowulf family means a lot especially within a community. Each character in the story has a role, duty, and expectation to fulfill to make sure their family and communities are safe. A family provides love, protection, and guidance. This also helps with confidence and self-esteem. A community makes people feel like they belong and that they have independence. In the story of Beowulf without family and a community the men were incomplete. The characters such as Hrothgar, Beowulf, and Grendel in the story they are fighting for their identity. Beowulf succeeds in killing Grendel turns around and kills his mom too. By Beowulf killing these monsters he is making a name for himself and finding his own identity. Years later when Beowulf is king he chooses to break the heroic code. Beowulf did not follow traditional route of a king. Instead of letting one of his warriors find there calling and identity he takes matters into his own hands and kills the dragon himself.
