He can support his people by being on the battle field, personal fame, and by seeking out conflict. Beowulf chooses to support his community and family by going to kill Grendel. Beowulf succeeds in killing Grendel turns around and kills his mom too. By Beowulf killing these monsters he is making a name for himself and finding his own identity. Years later when Beowulf is king he chooses to break the heroic code. Beowulf did not follow traditional route of a king. Instead of letting one of his warriors find there calling and identity he takes matters into his own hands and kills the dragon himself. Every one of his warriors backed out expects Wiglaf his loyal warrior. Wiglaf acted as family. That is why family is Important in Beowulf Wiglaf gave Beowulf the support he needed to kill the dragon. Beowulf kills the dragon and it costs him his life. As a king Beowulf is supposed to be the protector and nurturer also put the good of people above his own desires, fame, and glory.
