A hop, skip and jump from Portsmouth, Virginia is the rural town of Wrongberight, where intermittent summer rainstorms, have transformed the roadways, into a slippery mess. One of the community’s lifelong resident’s, Clemmy Sue Jarvis, a petite, vivacious woman of sixty-three, would rather dance the Virginia Reel with a skunk than drive on rain soaked roads. However, late Saturday afternoon she has no other choice, but to cautiously, ease out of her driveway, turn south onto Flat Bottom Road and follow it along the edge of the Dismal Swamp to the isolated home of her dearest friend Estelle Louise. For the past forty years, Clemmie Sue has traveled this route and knows it as well, as she knows the lyrics, to - ‘Carry Me Back to …show more content…

Honey, today be your double nickel birthday and I gots a feelin’ he be filling your thimble full of luck by the end of this here day.” “I do declare, I hope that there be true.” Estelle Louise wiggles and jiggles her three hundred-forty pound, five-foot-six frame out of the rocker, snatches up her pocketbook, and she and Clemmy Sue hasten for the front …show more content…
She immediately rummages under the seat and found, a large black plastic trash bag, a roll of duct tape, and jerry-rigged a makeshift window. Shortly after she finishes, Clemmie Sue climbs into the pickup, her long curly grayish blonde hair is a mess of sopping tangles, and the mud had liberated her shoes from her feet. Clemmy Sue instantly notices her newfangled window and says, “Lord have mercy, Estelle Louis, I wants to be thankin’ y’all a heapin’ bunch for mendin’ that there winder.” “Wont nothin’,” Estelle Louise said. “Clemmy Sue, It be mighty wet out yonder and we be lookin’ mighty poorly, so imma thinkin’, maybe we ought not be goin’ to Ruby’s tonight.” “Oh! Hells bells, this here piddlin’ rain ain’t nothin’ but a frog wash and imma sure Ruby ain’t gonna care what we be lookin’ like, so long as we gots money,” says Clemmy Sue as she puts the truck in gear and heads towards the main road. As they approach the end of the driveway Estelle Louise said, “Since we be this here close to my mailbox, I wants to be checkin’ my mail.” “No can do, cause your box be sittin’ square in the middle of a water

The story embarks a journey in defeating evil while also portraying strained relationships through the process, especially that of Will Halloway and his dad. Throughout his childhood, Will had never felt a connection with his father due to their distance; especially due to Mr. Holloway and Wills extensive age gap, they are unable to relate to the same interests and therefore result in feelings of indifference towards one another. However, the new carnival in town produces a common enemy who goes by the name of Mr. Dark, forcing Will and his father to communicate and worry about each other during the process…
