For my final cultural report, I ate dinner with my family at Gran Ranchero, an authentic Mexican restaurant in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The first thing I noticed about the restaurant was the décor. There were sombreros, maracas, and murals of homes and people in Mexico on the walls on the restaurant. There was also traditional Mexican music being played in the restaurant. Our waiter us gave our greeting in Spanish and then translated it into English.…

Another such example is the Conflict Kitchen which serves food from countries with which the United States has been in conflict with. The restaurant generates a consciously shifting site for ethnic diversity in the post-industrial city of Pittsburgh, as it has staged the only Afghan, Iranian, North Korean, Palestinian and Venezuelan restaurants the city has ever seen. Conflict Kitchen uses the social relations of food to involve people into discussions about nations, cultures, traditions and people that they might know little about outside of the polarizing rhetorical government politics and the narrow lens of public media. I believe this type of restaurant provokes conversations about building designs in these different cultures. Resulting…

Yuki Japanese Restaurant, in Fremont, serves delectable Japanese entrées and amazingly fresh sushi in its warm and friendly eatery. The ikura mini-don small sized serving of salmon roe over sushi rice and a cup of the zousui rice soup in savory broth make excellent starters to your meal. Some of Yuki Japanese Restaurant’s specialty kitchen entrées include the thin-sliced and marinated ginger beef dinner, the grilled mackerel smoked saba and the yakitori skewered and grilled chicken coated in a thick sweet sauce. Diners are consistently impressed with the quality of Yuki Japanese Restaurant’s sushi. A few of the most popular rolls include the spider roll with soft shell crab, avocado, kaiware and burdock, the Fremont with spicy tuna, shrimp…

To this day, America’s food culture remains to be its pride and joy, yet interestingly enough, what is understood by many to be the traditional food culture of America actually varies greatly from one part of the North American Continent to the other. However, of the vastly differentiating cultures found throughout America, one cannot deny that there is one region in particular who’s culinary culture is well defined, and easily recognizable. Actually, the entire region’s identity is nearly dependent on its distinct food culture; the American South. The south’s distinct and flavorful cuisine is admired throughout the nation and has become an important part of the average american’s diet. According to the HPBA, over 15,000,000 grills were sold…

There have many landmine clearance ordinances such as “Clearing a Path to Development”. The question I wanted the answer to was if food was “racist”, with that in mind I did research to see if there were any studies done to see if some races preferred certain food over others. Foods that are easy to get to such as fast food or pre-made meals are popular choice for people especially for those who are college aged. There is a general low intake of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables and most people, male and female, aren’t meeting the recommend diet and exercise patterns. Studies have shown that race and ethnicity certainly is one of the important roles in food choice, but environment, economic standing and your family also play roles.…

    Irani Cafe Case Study

    • 884 Words

The Irani café was gifted to Mumbai by a small group of Iranians who has called the city home since the 19th century. The story goes that the canny immigrants opened up cafés in corner locations that Hindus felt were inauspicious; the cafés thrived, their food calibrated to tempt not just the local Parsis*, Christians, Hindus and Muslims, but sometimes also the British that were stationed in the area. Some cafés had a rather sparse menu -- the century-old Sassanian started out serving only biscuits, sponge cake, brun maska (generously-buttered loaves of crusty bread) and chai. Many dished out Parsi* and Irani food which was supplemented by their in-house bakeries selling bread, cakes and pastry. And almost all of them doubled up as general stores, stocking all manner of provisions such as toothpaste and soaps, along with more Westernised items like canned goods.…
