Flamingos are large compared to most birds, as they stand 3.3-4.9 feet tall. Their large size would usually prohibit them from flying, but they have adapted to only weigh 4.4-8.8 lbs. They have hollow bones like most birds, and long skinny legs. The length of their legs also allows them to wade in deeper water than most birds. They also evolved webbed feet for swimming and walking on on the mud that covers the bottom of the lakes and rivers that they live in. There are only 6 known species of flamingo. They are the American Flamingo, Andean Flamingo, Chilean Flamingo, Greater …show more content…
In the wild, they live in North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. They are highly social birds, and they usually live in flocks of about 50 flamingos. However, in one lake in Africa, over 1 million flamingos can be spotted in the same place. They make the surface of the lake near the shore look pink because there are so many of them in such a small space.
Flamingos are well adapted to their environment. They have large wings to help them fly and large feet to help them swim and stand up in the water. They also behave in ways that are beneficial to their survival. When in cold water, a flamingo will stand on one leg to preserve body heat. Due to the reduction in surface area in contact with the water, less heat will be lost due to conduction, and therefore a higher internal body temperature for the flamingo in the water. Male flamingos also perform a complex mating dance that shows the females which one is the strongest, which helps in evolution.
In conclusion, Flamingos are unique but highly adapted birds that show us just how diverse the animal kingdom can
