Studies have shown that women directors could help corporations gain a competitive advantage by dealing more effectively with diversity in their product and labour markets. With a good gender diversity, shareholders can be represented better by the Boards, work/life balance can be better appreciated which would also help in recruiting and retaining top executive women and minorities.
The new CEO, Matthias Muller, was handpicked by the company’s 20 member supervisory Board, 17 of them who were German or Austrian. Lack of a broad international mix on the board, especially an executive with U.S experience compounded Volkswagen’s problems in North America. In addition to lack of gender diversity, Germany’s corporate governance system is held back by its cliquishness. There are still a plenty of directors with overlapping business interests.
