According to Maya Angelou a “Hero is any person really intent on making a better place for all people.” In other words, a hero is someone that makes sacrifices, and contributes to others. In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus must defeat supernatural obstacles such as gods, and cyclops to return home to his son and wife after 20 years. Although Odysseys is quickly perceived as a hero through its narrative perspective, He is ultimately an antihero which is explained through Odysseus’s selfish personality, and lack of compassion. When Odysseus finally returns home after a long torturous adventure he comes home to find suitors wasting away at his stores. The suitors eating up his stores enrages Odysseus which leads to him devising a plot with, his son, Telemachus to kill the suitors even though most didn’t commit a crime but showed a lack of compassion, and greed. Homer emphasizes how Odysseus lack of compassion towards the suitors illustrates the antihero Odysseus really is when he must be told by his son who not to kill as Medon, the herald, who cries out in fear “Ask your father to hold back too, or he might kill me”, and how “as mad as he is at the suitors” the only reason Odysseus spared the herald was because of his son telling him to. Through Odysseus having to be told to stop killing certain people Homer emphasizes how Odysseus ‘s lack of compassions leads to the death of the sons of several Ithacan men.
