Throughout the book "The Metamorphosis" you will see Franz Kafka’s fictional story about a man who becomes a bug and on multiple occasions you will watch him get dehumanized by his family members. The question now is who dehumanized Gregor the most? The answer is Gregor’s father, on multiple occasions, he will make Gregor feel like he doesn’t feel Gregor is even a person.
One of the main reasons Gregor was dehumanized by his father more than the rest of the family his father wanted to kill him. His father felt as if Gregor wasn’t still “in” there and he found him to be a burden on the family. Here is a quote from the book when Gregor’s father tried to kill Gregor using nothing more than fruit “He had filled his pockets with fruit from the bowl on the sideboard and now, without even taking the time for careful aim, threw one apple after another. This quote from the book shows a perfect example of this,
“ "If he could just understand us", said his father” “. His father watched as Gregor turned from a young man to a bug. His father felt that just because Gregor couldn’t speak anymore meant that he couldn’t understand them. His father had come to the conclusion that Gregory was “gone” or his soul was no longer in his body.
If Gregor’s father felt like Gregor shouldn’t be able to see his mom, understand and that the only way to handle the situation was to kill Gregor, then how could you say he didn’t dehumanize Gregor? When you dehumanize someone it means to “deprive of positive human qualities” and his father showed on multiple occasions that he felt Gregor was no longer a human in any shape or form. So, in the end, do you agree? Did Gregor’s father dehumanize him the
