Throughout Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows many examples of the main theme, forbidden love. In this story two feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets, each have a child who falls in love with the other. The young Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague meet and fall in love at first sight. They know they cannot be together because of their names, and that is how the main theme, forbidden love, comes about.
Act 1 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet is right after they met each other and find out each other's last name. When Romeo found out Juliet is a Capulet, he said, “Is she a Capulet?
O dear account! My life is my foe’s debt” (Shakespeare Act 1 Scene 5).
Later, when the nurse told Juliet that Romeo is a Montague, she said,

He had to sneak into her room from her balcony because nobody could see him come in. Another example was when the nurse came running into Juliet’s room to warn her that Lady Capulet was on her way. These are examples of forbidden love because Juliet had to sneak in Romeo and he had to leave quickly so that her parents would not find out.
Another way Shakespeare showed forbidden love in Romeo and Juliet is when Romeo was banned and had to go to Mantua. In Act 3 Scene 1 the Prince banned Romeo from Verona. When Romeo was banned the only people who knew about Romeo and Juliet being married were Romeo, Juliet, Friar Laurence, and Nurse. Romeo being banned from Verona was an example of forbidden love because even people who did not know about Romeo and Juliet being together still caused them so they could not see each other.
