Jem gets dared to touch the Radley Place, a mysterious house to the children. “Our first raid came to pass only because Dill bet Jem The Gray Ghost against two Tom Swifts that Jem would not get any further than the Radley gate” (Lee 17). In this quote Dill is proposing the bet to Jem. Remember, Jem is very brave and never turns down a dare. “Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see if his foray was successful” (Lee 19).
