Individuals within a community have to work together as one for the common goal of a healthy living unit for all. This can only be achieved by letting go of ratification and working as a whole towards this goal healthy living. Ratification is when people look for a facts and approval of the explanation another individual is giving them. Terrance Brunk, English professor and author of “Reading, Ratification, and Risk” goes into great depth about the cycle of ratification. All the individuals within a community have to work together and interact on a daily basis to have a have a healthy environment. Marra James a politician says [The reason is we are all social animals and we must live and interact and work together in community to become fulfilled.] (Bellah 68) James knows that communities are all full of people who socialize and interact with one another if the individuals within a community do not do these things then they are not fulfilling community. Communities are built on the relationships of the individuals. If something is done to damage the relationships that the individuals have within a community then help is needed to resolve the damage. If the individual and the rest community cannot come up with a common ground someone from outside of the community will be forced upon them. An outsider point of view can help depict a resolution to the conflict that an individual and the community might be having. Writer Nancy Scheiper-Hughes, talks about how people reach out to other people when help is needed. Hughes states, “In any field, an outsider’s point of view can sometimes provoke a break through” (Brunk xix). A community is constantly in need of growth in all aspects, so that it will appeal to all different groups of people. Growth within a community starts with the individual. The only way for this to take place is for the community to let go of ratification and allow open-mindedness among the individual. Robert Scholes, a literacy writer talks about people must let go of ratification to grow beyond what they already know. Scholes says, “Good readers abandon the safety of ratification and risk an encounter with another person’s ideas and experience’s in exchange for the opportunity of new thinking and growth” (Brunk xix). Scholes believes that new opportunity of growth is obtained only by letting go of ratification. The only way for a community to grow is to dismiss ratification once it is dismissed then the responsibility of growth and innovation a community has to its individuals can occur. Cecilia Doughterty a politician talks about individuals who let go of their concerns for themselves to concern for everyone. Doughterty says, “Bring people away from concern only about their own lives, to a sense of much, much broader, greater responsibility” (Bellah 71). If people are only concerned about themselves then they are not utilizing greater responsibility that they have to do something good. A community has a responsibility to the individuals within it to uphold growth. The
