As Elbert Hubbard says, “We are not punished for our sins, but by them.” This is most certainly the case in Khaled Hosseini’s novel, The Kite Runner. Through the protagonist’s eyes, we are shown how evil, in the form of sins, can control people from birth, adolescence, adulthood, and can lead to their demise. This is primarily demonstrated with Baba’s pride blinding and controlling him from Hassan’s conception, to his own death. Another example of sin is the rage displayed in Assef, a boy who grows up to be a sociopathic man. Lastly, Amir himself demonstrates envious feelings against Hassan. All three of these men would deny their sins, mostly because they are blinded with self-purpose.

This evil injustice that Baba committed made him strive to be better, but it also made him wicked. By not telling the truth, by being so self-consumed, Baba puts more pressure on Amir, giving him unrealistic expectations to live up to. Another act of pride Baba displays is he will not accept reimbursement from any of the people he helps through charity. Secondly, at his thirteenth birthday party, Amir learns his, “…Baba had lent Dello the money to open his restaurant. Baba had refused repayment until Dello had shown up one day in [their] driveway…and insisted he wouldn’t leave until Baba took his money”. Baba’s self-virtue is so strong that he will not allow himself to be thanked by others. He feels as though it is his job to save everyone from poverty. This feeling stems from his desire to abolish his sin of fathering Hassan out of wedlock. When he arrives in America, Baba, “…[drops] the stack of food stamps on [the] desk. ‘Thank you but I don’t want,’ Baba said. ‘I work always. In Afghanistan I work, in America I work.
