Indirect duty means that we don’t have direct duties to animals, but we do have duties about animals. So torturing an animal is wrong because it harms the animal not because it upsets other humans. It is mainly the farm animals, lab rats and other animals in this category that are being treated cruelly. Some of the other animals’ people are a little more sentimental towards which isn’t fair to the ones being tested on. This is why you see lab experiments being test on these certain animals rather than all. They all should have the same respect from humans because they’ve done nothing wrong to us. Contractarianism isn’t a great way to determine if animals have rights or not. We have some direct duties to animals because they are to be treated fairly and also acting as a n indirect duty is not entirely true for animals.
An objection would be Animals have inherent value, just not as much as human. But even saying this means that you would have to agree that animals have rights to a certain extent.
