Extending School Hours

Improved Essays
To whom this may concern to in administration,

The schoolboard is considering extending the school day to 5:00 P.M. As a student, I take core classes as well as other electives that give out homework almost at a daily basis. I also have; classwork, electronic assignments, essays, and tests that are all required to be completed as a grade. All these exhaust me and rescind my ability to do anything else but rest once I return to school. Even when I have 6+ hours to complete assignments before I sleep, I struggle to complete assignments because I feel overwhelmed. This is why I jeer at the sheer mention of extending the school hours until 5:00. The idea of extending school hours is completely irrational of the schoolboard. Even with school

Should the school board add on one and a half hour ? The school board should not add on one and a half hours to our school hours, because some kids might have another job, some have sports to do, they might have something important to do. The reason they shouldn’t add on a hour and a half is because some kids or teachers might have another job to attend. Most teachers have a second job they have to be at .…

High school students are expected to sit through 7 hours of instruction, complete 2-4 hours of homework, have a social life, be active in their family, and get the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep all in one day. Now with studies showing teenagers experience a change in their internal clocks, there has to be some adjustment made. Students are having a harder time waking up and falling asleep early enough to be prepared for school. To help students cope with this change in their internal clocks; high schools should begin later, and end later in the day. Hearing an alarm clock go off at 6:30 in the morning is an awful and discouraging sound.…

We have all had one of those days. At 6:30 sharp, your alarm rings incessantly for you to drag yourself out of bed, get your clothes on, and get out bright and early for the bus to go to school. Then, you must find the willpower to stay awake in your morning classes, tests and homework included, until the lunch bell rings. This all happens because of the common school start time of around 7:50, but for some reason many schools, especially middle and high schools, are thinking of bringing this time to 7:15, leaving even less and less time for students to get ready. There may be some reasons why schools may want this, but the negative effects of this decision are undeniable.…

It has become troublesome and confusing to me as to why our local school district would require children in intermediate school (10 to 12 years old) to start school at 7:40 a.m. Please note that this is their start time and doesn’t include their actual wake up time, prep time and travel to school. As I began to research this more in depth I was stunned to find the numerous effects and potential effects in relation to academics, physiological and the emotional distress it could have on students. My wife and I also reached out to other students’ parents and became even more intrigued as that they shared the same concerns and problems they recently were seeing in their own children. I honestly believe when something becomes more personal…

The Mill Valley High School Board members should reject the proposed idea of a later school day because it is beneficial to students with after school activities such as sports and jobs. The idea that a later school day is beneficial towards students is preposterous because students with after school activities and jobs would need to be out of school at an earlier hour. Take John Sherwood’s testimony for example. He complains, “But it’s going to make football practice a nightmare. We won’t be able to be dressed and on the field until 4:45, and in October, it starts getting dark by 5:30...…

While it won’t be easy to create a whole new schedule it may prove to be beneficiary to the students. As stated in the article Eight Major Obstacles to Delaying School Start Times “many students find that if they sleep more, they can finish their homework faster and have ample time to participate in extracurricular activities”. It will not suit everybody’s daily routine though, as their will be some drawbacks that will cause problems to arise for transportation, after school activities, and teachers. As mentioned in Eight Major Obstacles to Delaying School Start Times “changing school start times could have a negative in transportation cost, redesigning the routes, and recruiting drivers”. In addition students may have limited time to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports and clubs which are a great way for students to take a break from studying and give their mind rest.…

I think that they should stop having five days of school a week. I think they should change it and we should only have four days of school a week. There are some schools out west that only have four days of school a week and we could just add an hour of school to each day so that we could make up for that day that we will miss. It would be way better because then people would have more time during the day to do work because of the extra hour and they would also have a longer weekend that if they had homework they could do it during the extra day. We could just go to school Monday through Thursday and have Friday off, plus that way we could have our Varsity football games on a day off from school.…
