Fahrenheit 451 Allusions Research
1. Allusion/Type: Juan Ramon Jimenez/ Literature
A. Quote: “If they give you ruled paper, Write the other way” (Bradbury XVII).
B. Explanation: In the Beginning of the story, this quote is an allusion to Juan Ramon a Jimenez, a Spanish poet. He earned the Nobel peace prize for literature in 1956. Jimenez was a well-known in the United States for his poetry. He wrote most of his poems in free verse, and he published over 300 poems (“Juan”).
2. Allusion/Type: Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels /Literature
A. Quote: "’I want you to meet Jonathan Swift, the author of that evil political book, Gulliver's Travels’” (Bradbury 71)!

Explanation: In this allusion, Bradbury is alluding to a poem written by William Blake called The Tyger. Published in 1794, this was one of the poems in Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience. In the poem, a tiger is the main focal point of the work symbolizing power. The Tyger shares the symbolism of fire, just like in Fahrenheit 451. “Tyger, Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night” (“Tyger”).
5. Allusion/Type: Hugh Latimer/Historical
A. Quote: " 'Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out “” (Bradbury 16).
B. Explanation: Hugh Latimer was born in 1485 in Leicestershire, England to a thriving yeoman farmer. Latimer studied at the University of Cambridge, and in 1510 he became priest of an orthodox Roman Catholicism church. However, in 1525, he converted to Protestantism because he was encouraged by Martin Luther’s doctrines. Ten years later Latimer was promoted to bishopric of Worcester and he was highly favored by King Henry VIII (“Hugh”).
6. Allusion/Type: Nicholas Ridley/ History
A. Quote "A man named Latimer said that to a man named Nicholas Ridley, as they were being burnt alive at Oxford, for heresy, on October 16, 1555” (Bradbury …show more content…
Explanation: Nicholas Ridley was born sometime around 1500 in Northumberland, England and is known as one of the smartest people during the era of reformation. Ridley become the Bishop of London in 1550 and he made efforts to reform England. He created a disturbance in London in efforts to change plain table for communion to the altar (“Nicholas”).
7. Allusion/Type: Benjamin Franklin/ History
A. Quote: “” Established, 1790, to burn English-influenced books in the Colonies. First Fireman: Benjamin Franklin.”"(Bradbury 16).
B. Explanation: Born in 1706, Benjamin Franklin was one of America’s most important founding fathers and greatest contributors to the Declaration of Independence. He also stood with America during the American Revolution. He was also the first person to create the first political cartoon. In addition, his contributions to science and electricity are highly appreciated among people today (“Benjamin”).
8. Allusion/Type: Tower of babel / Biblical
A. Quote: “” None of those books agree with each other. You've been locked up here for years with a regular damned Tower of Babel”” (Bradbury
