Fascinating Worker Ants

The ant sprints along the crack in the sidewalk avoiding the devourous, monstrous shadows looming above. With every object that blocks the sun, comes another hope and prayer thrown towards the sky. If an ant was human size, at its top speed it would run approximately 30 miles per hour, but they are nearly 1/558 the size of humans. To escape the abundance of bored children at recess, ants have to be very agile and deceptive. Along with these traits, ants have a plethora of skills in their toolbelt to be put to good use at any time. From the day that worker ants are born, their primary job is to move specs of dirt on this earth into what humans call an anthill. These anthills are primal targets for children between the ages of four and seven. Children of that age have an average attention span of 10-15 minutes. When they are playing baseball in the field, kids can only focus for so long before they start to get bored and search for the next object to feast their curious, ever-searching minds on. In most cases, this turns the kids to the nearest anthill. The pile of neatly sorted dirt has never look as appealing as when a child is bored. Everthing that ants have worked for in their lives could turn …show more content…
Dodging every incoming object that has fallen from the sky is a mighty fine skill that ants have learned to use to their full advantage; however, this can be a hard task to endure all of the time. This is why it's important that ants can withstand up to 5,000 times their body weight before their necks rupture. With the force of gravity pulling down all of the falling objects, it can sometimes feel like it is raining debris for the ants. When this feeling arises, ants race to find the nearest fallen leaf to lift above their heads mightily to protect themselves. Then, after the storm has passed, the ant flings the leaf to the wayside and goes out to forage again for the queen

Within Ian Frazier's essay, "In Praise of Margins," he defines "marginal" as a negative tinge. He introduces the essay with his past childhood experience where he roamed "the woods" and now that he is an adult, he feels goals should have a purpose. The woods were his marginal space where he played with his friends aimlessly. Thus, his perspective has changed; seeing his children get distracted from their original plans to fish, a sense of unstructured play is quite valuable. He also states that without it, people would not be able to have the incentive for creative innovations or developing new ideas.…

Back in the late 1960s, Walter Mischel, a Stanford University psychologist, conducted a psychological experiment known as the Marshmallow test. The experiment was conducted at the Stanford University nursery. He wanted to understand the concept of delayed gratification in a small child between the ages of 4 and 6. The idea was to create a situation for the child to choose between a small reward now and a large reward later, thus causing a conflict situation. They were deliberately placed in a room with no mental stimuli, which allowed them to see if the children could distract themselves from the reward.…

This is day 2 of the Man vs. Nature war. So far, the ants have not gotten inside the compound, the housing buildings atop a hill, only past the water moats in the far edges of the plantation. And they got across on leaves! We can actually see the barren lands behind the swarm. Apparently, these ants are so powerful, they will eat everything of an organic compound, including trees and full grown animals such as cattle and horses.…

Introduction Termites, Isotera, are known to react to the exposure of the chemical substance found in ball point pens. Naturally, termites will follow any trail made up of pen ink. This specific observation was tested and carried out by Sim et al. They “investigated how termites select the direction of movement at an artificially-designed branching node, by making chemical trails on filter paper, drawing lines using a ballpoint pen which contained the chemical substance that induces the termite to follow trails” (Sim et al. 2012). Knowing how termites react when exposed to these specific chemicals on filter paper, the dependence of the color of filter paper was unknown.…

The Roman civil wars, the assassination of Caesar, and the rise of Octavian’s empire led to hostilities and discords among the Roman Republic. The consequential political oppression brought by the Augustan Principate encouraged writers to utilize different literary devices to express their political ideologies about current events and the future of Rome. In this paper I will discuss how Augustan writers, Virgil and Ovid, utilized animal anthropomorphism as means of political expression in order to criticize Rome’s broken and divided state. Furthermore, I will discuss the use of anthropomorphism in Pliny the Elder’s The Natural History, who was writing years after the Roman Empire had been established. Although far removed from the turmoil, Pliny lived with the consequences of these…

To understand why this the case a brief understanding of the experiment and the observation of the behavior of the ant is needed and hence is outlined. While the tracker followed the ant in a particular case, the light from the sky incident on ant 's eye viewed was deliberately depolarized completely. This resulted in the ant moving in arbitrary directions. We know from earlier on that the sun is a source of unpolarized light and also the point in the sky where it is maximally unpolarized, Thus, by completely depolarizing the entire sky, the suns unpolarized light/position gets drowned with the other unpolarised light. The fact that the ant loses orientation, in this case, proves that the reference point the ants use is the sun.…

Whenever one is startled, or caught off-guard, the innate human response is to either flee or fight. Most human brains are wired to run from danger. This runs parallel to when humans are faced with a problem or a difficult situation. Many individuals would rather run away from problems than work at resolving them. The novel “Things That Fly” by Douglas Coupland conveys the themes of Escape as well as The Human Condition in his short story by utilizing the symbols of Superman, the narrator’s messy apartment, and birds’ ability to fly.…

He said that these particular ant species may be small, "yet it can outcompete other ant species and form large colonies that bring trouble where it goes." Aside from that, the little yellow ant "has a fantastic ability to spread, because a whole colony can fit in a very small twig, plant debris, or potted plant.” In contrast, while the little yellow ant does not bite or sting, they can be difficult to manage when it infests a structure. Despite this impending situation, Chouvenc is positive that these ants won’t further spread, but will continue to monitor the yellow…
