In the movie Fatal Attraction, directed by Adrian Lyne, females are portrayed to be recessive toward men. Fatal Attraction has two female characters, Beth (Dan’s wife), and Alex (Dan’s mistress). However, this story isn’t about rainbows and unicorns. As we, audience members, interact in the movie, we compare and contrast both Beth and Alex with the dominant character Dan. Adrian Lyne is portraying two different women in society; Alex is the working woman and Beth is the housewife. Therefore, this movie support male dominated society and how women are portrayed as needing a man in their lives to feel completed.
In a male dominant society, the male is the rule maker. Things must always be approved by him. She is a stay at home mom, which mean she depends on her husband to support her financially. Beth looks like a innocent, loyal, and strong woman that does what she has to do to keep her family safe. In one scene of the movie, Beth calls Dan and asked him if it was okay for Hildy to have a rabbit. Beth had to get his approval and persuade him to buy his daughter a rabbit. This situations shows how the woman has to receive permission from her husband. She solves all his problems for him, but yet she is still depending on Dan to provide for her. Beth seeks her husband’s attention, but only for simple stuff related to the family. This also shows how Dan dominates over his wife and how she is depended on her husband. In another scene, at the end of the movie, after handle Dan’s issue with Alex. She then forgives Dan and continue to live with him.
