Female Guppies Research Paper

Decent Essays
A study conducted by the universities of Glasgow and Exeter have found that female guppies swim faster than male guppies due to their unwanted sexual advances. Female Trinidadian guppies were subjected to different levels of sexual harassment over a course of several months. The female guppies became faster after five months of swimming away from the males. In fact the way the females swam changed drastically. The female guppies that were exposed to a low amount of harassment from the males kept their pectoral fins extended when swimming while the females exposed to a higher amount of harassment did not. This proves that the individual fish will actually change their entire physiology of swimming to adapt in their environment. Male guppies

Compensation is the maintenance of the levels of physiological processes, despite changes in temperature. This experiment was coordinated to determine whether crayfish will show metabolic compensation when acclimated to various temperatures. The findings of this study show that temperature had no effect on crayfish oxygen consumption. The oxygen consumption for both the warm and cold acclimated crayfish was almost the same, despite the opposite direction of the temperature change. The results of this study therefore support the hypothesis.…

Discussion The threespine sticklebacks’ (Gasterosteus aculeatus) ability in evolving help them achieve the greatest amount of fitness and success for the future year. The group used the variable predation and calcium concentration to understand the stickleback better. Before measuring the group made a primary and secondary hypothesis. The primary hypothesis concluded that rainbow trout predation acts as selective source on the spine size of three spine stickleback because the different sizes of spines will indicate the difficulty of eating that particular stickleback. The secondary hypothesis concluded that the spine size in threespine stickleback is affected by the calcium limitation in the environment because the bones require calcium to grow and strengthen. While the group was measuring, they saw that the predation for the tout was longer than 8’ which helped measuring the calcium concentration because the calcium forms the bones in organisms.…

In juvenile crayfish males are not dominant over females which leads scientists to conclude that some type of hormones is the cause of male dominance in sexually mature crayfish. When crayfish were blinded their aggressive behavior was not restricted, which may be explained by evolution in nocturnal forms. Crayfish that had their antennae clipped and were blinded showed significant changes in behavior. In order for dominance in crayfish to be formed both visual and tactile senses are required. Despite the experiments producing reliable results, on an ecological scale the experiments are not valid.…

In Athletes in the Pool, Girls and Boys on Deck by Michela Musto capture a little bit of what society would look like if everything was classified based on the capacities on an individual. Musto in her article finds that athletes did not associate swimming with gender. When talking about racing swimmers, Cody stated “It doesn’t matter . . . it’s just, like, the same thing’ if he loses to a girl or a boy” (206), referring to the fact that it did not matter who he lost to because at the end what is really valued are the swimmers abilities.…

Crayfish are freshwater crustaceans that use their claws called chelipeds, for warning off predators. When frightened, these crayfish lift their chelipeds to make threatening gestures, all while moving backwards or staying still. We examined how long it would take for crayfish to calm down once removed from the water and if the temperature had any influence to this observation. To do this, we placed two crayfishes in room temperature water and another two in colder water for an interval of five minutes and again for ten minutes. Once the time was up,we measured how long it took for the crayfish to lower their claws.…

Scientific Validity of “Study links altered brain chemistry, behavioral impairments in fish exposed to elevated CO2” Coral reefs are having a problem with pH levels and they are dying some places around the world right now, because of it. This is not only affecting the coral reefs, but the animals that live in them and survive with them. There is a Scientific Study called “Study links altered brain chemistry, behavioral impairments in fish exposed to elevated CO2” which discusses the behavior and neurological impairments of coral reef fish due to more CO2 and acidic levels of pH. More CO2 causes lower levels of pH and makes it more acidic and very dangerous for fish. Overall this is a poor scientific article, because it has only one good source…

In conclusion to their experiment, scientist have suggested that the higher gas deposition rate in silver eels may have been the result of morphological and physiological transformations to the eels during metamorphosis. This article holds a very large importance in biology because it could potentially be used to explain how different versions of the same species(especially yellow and silver eels in this case) may act and migrate to different environments to reproduce. This article also suggests that different breeds of the same species may have different capabilities like how silver eels had nearly 5 times the swim bladder gas deposition rate as the yellow eels did.…

While watching the film Triumph of Life it makes references to important topics we have discussed in class, for instance, when the different species are trying to reproduce, as well as some having the ability for gene cloning. The process of natural selection by which organisms adapt to the environment to produce more offspring and survive to continue their genes in further generations. A process of natural selection is intrasexual selection which is when males compete with other male species to win over the female to reproduce their genes. In the film with a beach full of harem female seals is dominated by a single male known as the beach master. Once another male seal arrives on the beach to seduce a female but they resist and their screams…

One of the most time tested pieces of culture, literature reflects the culture of its writers and their nation. Within literary works of The Wild Honeysuckle and The Indian Burial Ground by Philip Freneau, Verses upon the Burning of our House, July 10th, 1666 by Anne Bradstreet, and To a waterfowl by William Cullen Bryant can be seen the developing character of being an American. Many of these poems show less to be desired traits found in everyday life. Within the pages of these poems can be found vanity, obduracy and contempt toward outsiders and fools. In the poems of To a waterfowl and Verses upon the Burning of our House, July 10th, 1666 vain ideals are given homage and treated with much respect.…
