From learning how to play the recorder in elementary school, to starring in the school play in high school, kids around the country participate in music classes and fine arts. However, in other areas of the United States, some students don’t get that oppertunity. Their school either can’t afford these classes, don’t think they’re important, or just don’t fund them. The students that have these music programs and are involved in them have proven that taking music education classes and participating in fine arts benefit them more than if they didn’t take them. First, music improves early cognitive development of the brain, which helps reading and math skills. Music also increases attention, critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity (Judson). For example, when someone plays a musical instrument, he or she is improving their ability to work corporately in teams and build discipline. Together, the students must work to prepare a piece of music for performance and commit to attending rehearsals, learning the music, and practicing. Playing a musical instrument builds and strengthens connections between brain cells, and improves memory and the ability to differentiate sounds and speech. Fine arts also challenges students, teaches them how to become sustained, self-directed learners, and teaches them how to work alongside with other students.
