Zakat is just another word for growth and purification. Muslim people believe that all things belong to God, so it is their responsibility as humans to distribute their wealth. The Zakat is basically giving a certain amount of your properties to the less fortunate. This also means giving to charity as much as one would please. Muslims believe that all their items and possessions will be purified if they donate to charity. The giving of alms isn’t specifically mentioned in the Quran, but they still believe that they have a priority to give to the needy. According to the website BBC, “Zakat does not refer to charitable gifts given out of kindness or generosity, but to the systematic giving of 2.5% of one 's wealth each year to benefit the poor” (“Five Pillars of Islam,” 2009). Basically, the author is saying that Muslims don’t donate a certain amount because they feel sorry for someone, but rather they give a specific percentage of their profit to help the poor in order to follow the Zakat.
