I set the strainer by the rows of measuring cups and asked Joe, “You know how you said Flannery O’Connor shouted to the atheists about grace? How is that her mission as a writer? Do you think a Christian has the same role today? Or… well… what do you think a Christian writer’s role should be?” He looked at me with a mix of approval and compassionate, as if I had asked a wonderful question, but as if he saw the anxiety lurking behind it. Closing the door of a cabinets and turns to me, he said, “You just write the best darn stories that you can.” It turned out Joe’s words set me free I had come to the Christian retreat house where art, being intellectual, and spirituality are celebrated with many questions; a major one being how to use my writing now that I had graduated, and more specifically, how to use it as a Christian. Joe’s words set me free because they are true. The best writing flow from what is important to the author. Its like music that is stuck in your head that you can’t help but sing.
