There are many themes in this story, but the one that transcends them all is the complexity of love. This story is the about the love of two inexperienced and pubescent main characters, Bryce and Julianna. Flipped demonstrates how love can sometimes be unsympathetic and ruthless; on the other hand, it also showcases all the contentment and delight that come with love. And every time I saw her, she seemed more beautiful. She just seemed to glow. I'm not talking a like a hundred-watt bulb; she just had this warmth to her. Maybe it came from climbing that tree. All I know is that compared to her, Shelly and Miranda seemed so… ordinary.” (Page 185)
The one word I would use to describe this passage is lyrical. Throughout the whole story both characters express deep emotions towards each other or outside forces. The author herself, send the reader a very warm, feeling in this passage. She transmits the message of how much Bryce truly loves Juli in a very “vicarious” way, or making us put ourselves in someone elses shoes.
