Children are receiving a high dosage of psychotropic medication. Psychotropic medications are drugs that have toxic chemicals acts on the brain to impact mood and behavior. There are many kinds of psychotropic drugs prescribe to foster kids. Foster care kids are prescribes these medications because of the drug company tactic that target doctors in the Medicaid program. The article “Addressing The Mental Health Needs Of Children In Foster Care: The Medical Home Model” states, “Studies by the Casey Foundation have shown that rates of psychiatric diagnoses or developmental disorders amongst foster children are as high as 50%, with approximately 80% of foster children receiving some form of mental health treatment ( Hutchison 1). People assume that foster children are at higher risk for mental health problems and emotional disorder. Children who are in foster care are exposing too many devastating events from the households. According to JoAnne Solchany says “Children who enter foster care face many changes and challenges that can lead to mental health disorders treated with psychotropic medications” (1). However, foster care children are diagnosed and treated for Attention –Deficit Hyperactivity disorder. Foster care children are taking at least one of psychotropic medications more than all children. Children who are in the foster care are misdiagnosing. However, the states do not know a child medical background and prevents the child for seeking justice. There is lack of experiences of people not trained to manage a child best interest. According to the article “Child Watch® Column: Overmedicating Children in Foster Care” states “JooYeun Chang, Associate Commissioner of the Children’s Bureau in the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children, Youth, and Families (ACF), testified before Congress that despite important steps taken by the Administration and Congress to promote the monitoring and management of psychotropic medications and the development of trauma-informed practices, too many child welfare agencies lack the proper non-pharmacological treatments to address the mental health needs of children in foster care (1). Many psychotropic medications are not approved for most children. So, all people should be aware of the harm overmedicating children because it can affect a child for the rest of he or she life. This will help to improve children well- being and make sure are not forgotten. Foster care children should feel the same ways as a normal child.
