Francisco Franco Ruled as the Head of Spain from 1936 through the victory from the Spanish Civil War. Many argue Franco was a fascist leader due to his oppressing and powerful rule in Spain after the Spanish Civil War. The term Fascist involves of ‘a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry commerce, and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.’ Per this term it is evident Franco shared similar qualities to peruse his ideologies with a violent and authoritarian style. His Christian Catholic beliefs played a big role in his dictatorship as he was from a very religious Family. Therefore, the catholic church has influence influenced with the policies and law that he put out for the public. For instance, divorces, contraception and abortion were forbidden in Franco’s laws as it was essential for the people of Spain to obey the law of God. On the other hand it was evident that Franco had 16 Basque non-Catholic Priests executed whilst he was taking revenge on the state in partnership with Hitler and the Germany Forces, but as the pope found out about this he sent Franco a telegram where he promised events such as these wouldn’t occur again. This shows there are other dominant voices above Franco which substantiate the fact his regime lacked a fascist leadership style. There are certain predicaments that shows he could be considered as a fascist leader for implementing new laws that must be followed and using violence to get his way through. However, whilst serving the state he also served his religion which makes him an authoritative dictator than a Fascist leader with a Fascist regime. Unlike Adolf Hitler who served his state above his religion with a fascist regime.
