Japan finished their attack and left Hawaii. In the end, eighteen warships and one hundred and eighty-eight aircraft were demolished and two thousand four hundred and three Americans perished. Only twenty-nine Japanese planes were lost during this ambush. The Kaneohe naval air station, that was attacked first, suffered lots of destruction from the Japanese and over one hundred planes were damaged. Debris covered the area and twenty people lost their lives on that particular deadly morning. America experienced great suffering and peril. Everyone hung blackout curtains in the windows and wore gas masks. There are many results of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the biggest being the entrance into World War II which President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared the day after the attack. Another one was the wreckage of the USS Arizona, which took on 1.2 million gallons of oil and was one of the many ships that were bombed. The ship’s oil is still leaking to this day, roughly two to nine quarts every day. The bombing of Pearl Harbor left this environmental effect and also has an emotional effect on the people who are brought back to December 7 when they see and smell the oil. The aftermath would take a long time to fully clear. Americans took extra precautions including the confinement of around 110,000 Japanese and Korean people that were taken to relocation camps for the rest of the war and would be used as “military zones,” which were kept until January 1945. The attack on Pearl Harbor also led the United States to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and was not only for revenge but also for saving lives and putting an end to their war later
