Frank’s Nuts and Bolts is a local hardware store chain that has been suffering from staffing issues including absenteeism, low productivity and other problems stemming from low morale. They recently advertised on TradeMe for a leadership role and were inundated with applications, and the current management team have narrowed down the list of preferred candidates to five. Frank, the CEO, has asked me to analyse the candidates’ responses to a question posed to them during their interviews on their leadership approach, and to subsequently provide recommendations for the candidate best suited for the situation the business currently faces.

Sarah McGregor
I believe Sarah could be a great example of a transformation leader. Transformational leaders are the kind that motivate and inspire individuals to not only perform as expected, but to exceed expectations, transforming not just the individuals but the organisation as a whole (Bartol, Tein, Matthews, & Sharma, 2007). Sarah matches the criteria for transformational leadership with her comment about increasing workers’ confidence and abilities to help them achieve goals of the organisation, all the while encouraging them and helping them see the bigger picture and think outside the box.
Sarah also satisfies the contingency approach known as path-goal theory. The main behaviours of leaders within path-goal theory relate to being supportive, directive, achievement oriented and participative. She professes support in her belief of the importance of increasing confidence and abilities; directive in how she helps workers to see the big picture and think outside the box; achievement oriented in her quest to encourage the workers to think of new ways of doing things; and by proxy she’d be participative by being their leader when they’ve not had one

Susan Colantuono is a leadership experts that focused her speech on why there are many women at the mid management level but very few women at the top management level. She advises there are three elements to leadership and that the first is personal greatness but it is not the most important. The speaker was not very engaging to me but she did have a valid point. Her technique of a flow chart to show women why they haven’t made it to CEO level made me tune out a bit. I selected this speech because it was directed towards women and to make sure they have better success in the business world.…
