The Issues with Free College With rapidly inflating college tuition, “free college” is fiercely debated in American politics. Seniors are graduating with overwhelming amounts of debt, often making them live with their parents longer or delaying life goals such as starting a family. Now more than ever, college students are looking towards America’s leaders to solve these growing issues, but while a free education is appealing, it creates more issues than it solves. Creating a system of free tuition would raise taxes, strain school budgets, and lower the value of a degree. In order for colleges to receive money that would normally come from tuition, the government would be forced to raise taxes in order to fund the schools. Making tuition free …show more content…
Additional professors, classrooms, living spaces, programs, and numerous other areas would need bolstering. Some schools with extravagant spending may exploit federal funding, but others will face an awfully difficult decision. Either turn away students or cut programs that students desire to enroll in. Both accomplish greater harm than good to the nation’s youth. Currently, countless students already face, among other issues, waitlists for classes which delay them from taking courses. Adding additional students will only aggravate these problems while further thinning resources. If school resources become too limited, then a decline in education quality will follow. This leads to graduates who are underprepared for the workforce and in worst cases an increasing number of underemployed workers. Aside from a decline in education quality, students must worry about their degree falling in value. One of the biggest components of college is setting oneself apart from others. The job market is highly competitive, and extra people holding the same degree will decrease the number of opportunities for graduates. Because of this, graduates will struggle to find ways to differentiate themselves from their peers. Education has a maximum, and handing out many of the same degrees lowers their value with every
