So the idea of governments taking people freedom, or worse the government is corrupt, creates more problems. These controlling governments turns citizens unhappy, and causes failures in the society. So with Mencken’s idea of strong safety over strong freedom, he does not know the factors of history.
In some cases masses amount of freedom can lead to bad happenings. For Mencken’s side, corporations in the 1800s were very corrupt and unfair; and working conditions, low wages, long hours. Which directly blames freedom of the people, but how would workers unions be created without individual freedoms? So yes, freedom creates problems, but it also saves and keeps human nature in check.
SO in conclusions M.L. Mencken’s idea of “safety is more important than freedom”, is plain wrong. Without freedom there would be no safety of a society. And with groups that put safety over freedom, they always are corrupt, failing or even they cause revolts and become free. SO in actual, freedom is more important than
