Back in the 1920s, window displays were new, and were used as a sort of “front shelf” or storeroom for commodities, Storekeepers were less worried about what went into the window displays or how items were displayed. But by the 1950s, retailers big and small come to realize that the front window is a brilliant way to attract in more buyers, particularly during the demanding holiday season.
So, what driven the transformation? In slice, it was the upsurge of plate glass. Before this revolution in the late 19th century, many sellers used billboards and signs entirely to display their merchandise. In the 1930s, during the prime of Hollywood, clothing forms and mannequins became common, and soon found themselves be the center of window displays.
