The winners will also not feel as content in life and will also be obsessed with buying things they would not have considered buying as a lottery player. Based on Durkheim’s theory, it is expected to already see differences in the wants of lottery players from low-economic and middle-class backgrounds. Why Casinos and Lotteries are Bad Casinos and lotteries are almost exactly the same as drugs, because they have just as much, or an even more addicting effect on the people. The one difference is the drug addict takes drugs and is basically “gone” in a mental sense, but the gamblers and people who play the lottery still consciously know what they are doing. This state can worse, because gambling addicts are purposely hurting their loved ones, and damaging their future, without “escaping” from the world. Lotteries and casinos are both ways to take money from people by making them voluntarily spend their money.…

The symbolism of the black box in this short story helps to portray the theme of tradition. The black box is the box that holds all the slips of paper when the lottery takes place. The black box has replaced once since the tradition started, but no one has bothered to replace it again out of sake for tradition: “The black box grew shabbier each year: by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood color, and in some places faded or stained (Jackson).” The black box is beginning to fall apart, and Mr. Summers claims he will replace it each year, yet no one ever does for “old time’s sake.” They are all blindly following the tradition, just to follow it, even though the box clearly needs to…

According to Webster Dictionary a Utopian Society, means an impossibly ideal society or way of life. To achieve this society people have to be happy no matter what happens, but they cannot be happy if they fear the alternative to their society. In Fahrenheit 451 by: Ray Bradbury, Harrison Bergeron by: Kurt Vonnegut and The Lottery by: Shirley Jackson, the society worked so hard to eliminate fear, Instead of achieving this they created a society where people were silenced, controlled, lost their individuality and had no opinions or thoughts of their own. People lost a sense of worth; making them cower into themselves and miss something, they could never quite place. The more they tried to create an ideal society the more they created a fearful…

And a quote from a character named Hannah Arendt called the lottery “the banality of evil” because the end result shows a brutal way to get rid of someone because towards the end of the story, a section of it points out that “although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stone” which proves that this is a worst type of way to play a “ game” and would get a “prize” but in reality the prize is getting stoned to death to reduce the population in a village instead of asking nicely to just simply leave the village not just creating some game to get rid of huge amounts of people by throwing stones…

All that we have has actually been entrusted to us by God who will one day soon call us to account for our stewardship. This principle is clearly seen in Jesus’ words in Luke 16:2: “give an account of thy stewardship…”…
