Dietary supplements are advertised on multiple platforms of media as safe, all-natural, and effective in improving the health of a person. One of the many advertisements for supplements was for a product called Garcinia Cambogia Plus (APEX VITALITY Inc., 2016). This product claims to increase the amount of weight a person can lose thanks to the benefits of the the fruit the supplement comes from, even stated that it was scientifically proven.

Garcinia Cambogia is truly from from a fruit that comes from South Asia as claimed (Semwal, R. B., Semwal, D. K., Vermaak, I., & Viljoen, A., 2015). The scientific community has confirmed that Garcinia Cambogia is plays the role of G. cambogia/ HCA in stimulating fat oxidation, increasing serotonin release in brain cortex and normalising lipid profiles in humans (Semwal, R. B., et al, 2015). Garcinia Cambogia has been observed to reduce abdominal fat in studies without variation between sexes, and was stated to be effective for someone attempting to lose weight (Hayamizu, K., et al, 2003)Despite this, the supplements may actually not be safe for consumption can increase one’s chances of serotonin toxicity due to the large amount of serotonin present in the supplements (Lopez, A. M., Kornegay, J., & Hendrickson, R. G., 2014). In multiple studies, in which obese lab rats who were given Garcinia Cambogia had been observed with testicular atrophy and toxicity it had been observed in other studies before when Garcinia Cambogia was added to the diet of rats (Saito, M., Ueno, M., Ogino, S., Kubo, K., Nagata, J., & Takeuchi, M.,2005). “Among the laboratory findings and symptoms there were reported fatigue, nausea, vomiting, colic, fever, chills, anorexia, abdominal pain, jaundice in a period ranging from three days to three weeks” (Fassina P. et al., 2015). After comparing the claims to public research it can be found that Garcinia Cambogia can be effect in helping a person lose weight, but is not completely safe because of the potentially harmful side effects that have been observed. Also there was no research to confirm or deny that weight loss is 2 to 3 times more effective when using Garcinia Cambogia.
