Yes, sure, all of these places are accessible through other means of transportation, but, not everyone has the comfort or afford to conform their schedules to fit it. Society lets the harm gasoline powered vehicles cause fall between the cracks more often than naught. The world's number of registered vehicles has reached over 1 billion in 2010 and no doubt that number is way larger now (“World Vehicle Population Tops 1 Billion Units”) In fact, the US is actually responsible with 1/5th of our global warming emissions being from personal excluding other transpiration like …show more content…
They have been around and designed since 1890. Electric cars were first created in England and France, The United States didn’t get interested in the idea until 1895. The first electric car produced may have been developed by M. Raffle in 1897. (Curtis D. Anderson, p.22) The United States adopted the electric car as taxi cabs in New York. In 1903, New York State alone had 4,000 registered cars with 53% of them being steam-powered, 27% gasoline-powered, and 20% electric. Hybrid vehicles concepts have been successful in the past and they were not publically noticed until November of 1905. (Curtis D. Anderson, p.36) Electric cars since struggled to keep up with their gas-powered counterparts until the stock market crash of 1929. Major companies that produced electric vehicles went bankrupt. The production of the electric car was put to a halt and wasn’t seen again until World War II. Electric cars have quite a long charge time which for a lot of consumers is not exactly ideal. Running out of a charge is a worry any consumer would worry about and only regions with a high number of electric cars would have charge station. Gas-powered cars beat the electric car with the convenience of fueling the car anywhere. Electric cars also have a limited range of driving, the most miles off a single charge could be anywhere between 80-100 miles depending on the model. For everyday driving I’m sure that’s not an issue, but, for more extensive trips, planning isn’t an ideal. Hybrids do fix this issue though. Electric cars are more expensive than the average car but what’s never considered is the low lease rates and maintenance cost. Yes, they are expensive but you get a luxury feel that a cheaper gas car couldn't give you. Lastly, electric cars give a limited choice. Unlike gas cars that give you ranges of size from compact to heavy duty trucks, the electric car are usually compact to

In Ryan Brown’s essay titled, “A Community of Cars,” he argues that the human race as a whole has become dependent on automobiles in a sense that we forget important human needs, such as exercise. People constantly want to drive places, even to places that would only take a ten to fifteen-minute walk to get to. Walking is immensely healthier for people than just sitting in a car seat for a few minute drive. By not walking, people can easily develop heart disease. Brown uses the fuel-efficient cars as a solution to his problem-based essay.…

In today's society gasoline cars dominate the streets, which emit large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. To combat this problem manufactures are starting to create electric cars, but most electric cars today make compromises in range, thus making them impractical. To decrease the environmental impact of gasoline cars, electric cars need to stop compromising. The purpose of this project was to create a car that can wirelessly charge off of pads on roads while driving, which would allow an electric car to surpass gasoline cars in range. First a wireless charging system had to be constructed to allow the car to be charged without any physical connections, while still being able to move.…

As the global concern for the environment increases with time, the desire to use cars decreases. People are aware that cars release fumes which, when combined, can be detrimental for the environment, and they want to do something about it. Elisabeth Rosenthal writes in her New York Times article, “In German Suburb, Life Goes on Without Cars”, that up to fifty percent of environmental greenhouse gas pollution comes from the cars driven in American suburbs. In her article, she quotes David Goldberg, an official of Transportation for America, that “All of our [the U.S.A.’s] development since World War II has been centered on the car, and that will have to change”. It seems like America, and the rest of the world, is becoming more aware about what…

All the talk about electric cars makes them sound efficient for our environment. Electric cars are a good idea, but they present a host of problems that make them useless for most consumers. The fact that most of these cars are only two-seaters eliminates families from driving them, unless they have it as a second car. Electric cars are also incredibly unsafe. This is not the car parents want to buy for their child's sixteenth birthday.…

Our citizens’ march in the street for change and oil companies take the majority of the blame. The bottom line is everyone wants less pollution; however, the reality is that we choose because of convenience. We choose the convenience of driving our own cars, instead of taking the bus to work.…

Maintenance costs can be very aggravating for car owners as well. The electric car has less moving parts than that of a gasoline car. The electric car has only one moving part, the shaft, that is reliable and requires little to no maintenance, while gasoline powered cars have hundreds of moving parts. Having less moving parts usually results in less maintenance needed, and less maintenance means more money saved. In addition to heavy maintenance costs, other disadvantages to owning a gasoline vehicle involves other costly repairs such as oil changes, filter changes, exhaust system repairs, etc.…

The challenges which I will be discussing in this essay are that of the auto industry in the United States. I will review current environmental issues and challenges which face the industry and attempt to provide possible solutions to meet these challenges. The US auto industry began in the 1890s due to the ability to mass-produce the vehicles for the local market consumers, which at the time were the only people with the means to afford such a luxury. Then and even nowadays as well, the automobile was a status symbol and was able to shift a paradigm of where one stood on the social scale.…
